Within Temptation in Lebanon: Review + Setlist

On July 10, 2012, Within Temptation performed live at Forum de Beirut, Lebanon, as part of their “The Unforgiving Tour”. Anneke van Giersbergen (formerly Agua de Annique) was also present as a supporting act for Within Temptation.

The show began on time at 9:00 PM sharp (which was surprising) with Anneke singing all her latest songs, which I really liked even though I didn’t know all of them and even though I wished she sang ‘Hey Okay!’, my favorite song of Anneke. But anyway, I’m not here to talk about Anneke, no matter how much I love her and find her beautiful ;-).

Back to Within Temptation. After 45 minutes of music, and 30 minutes of dead time, a video is played on screen with “Within Temptation presents Mother Maiden” as a title. Then, as soon as the video was over, Within Temptation came on stage and played an incredibly awesome setlist of 19 songs and 1hour 55 minutes of pure music, and here it is:

Within Temptation Setlist Forum de Beyrouth, Beirut, Lebanon 2012, The Unforgiving World Tour

This setlist is the best setlist any Within Temptation fan might wish for. I would have loved to talk about every song but if I do, it would take me five hours to finish writing this article and one hour for you to read it, so I will make it short.

There are three things I want to point out:

1) Sharon den Adel’s voice was perfect, unlike most of the YouTube videos of her live performances. I was worried of seeing her singing live, but she was awesome. Some songs even sounded better live than recorded. Plus, she is absolutely gorgeous.

2) She was really enjoying her time and was obviously surprised to see that the Lebanese crowd can be such a nice crowd. Everyone was excited, jumping and singing all the time. That’s probably what encouraged Sharon to keep entertaining the crowd: on a few songs, Within Temptation played a slightly longer version with extended instrumental parts so that Sharon had time to have fun with everyone in the crowd.

3) I was so happy to see one of my favorite bands finally live. I almost cried at some point, but did not after all. There wasn’t a single second where I was bored or where I thought about something else than the show. It was perfect. There’s no doubt about that.

The only negative thing I can say about the show is that the quality of the sound and speakers was really bad, which is really disappointing especially knowing that the show was produced by 2U2C.

Anyway, besides this small technical problem, I thought it was the best concert I’ve ever seen in Lebanon. I’m obviously biased. I love Within Temptation and I love them even more now, but I think those who attended the concert agree with me. So tell us what you thought of the show in the poll below !

5 Games Everyone Must Have

With hundreds of millions of applications to download from the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android), it is increasingly difficult to find truly enjoyable games. You most probably would think of Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Fruit Ninja, Ninjump and many others as the best games but there are many others worth the shot too! This is why I decided to compile a list of five of my favorite games and five games I think everyone must have.

1. Orba
Available on iOS (designed for iPhone and iPad).

Orba is the first game I downloaded on my original iPhone (a.k.a. iPhone 2G). It is also the first game I downloaded on my new iPad five years later. Five years and I still didn’t stop playing this game. Orba is a color smasher, and a deliciously addictive one just like its developers wrote in the app description. Whether you just have free time or want to rest for five minutes after studying or working, play Orba!

2. Monsters Ate My Condo (M.A.M.C.)
Available on iOS (designed for iPhone and iPad) and Android.

Once featured as Free App of the Week on the App Store, I downloaded this game to try it, and I absolutely loved it. It is the most addictive game I ever played and the only game I think I have a pretty good high score. Download it, try it and try to beat my high score ! 😉

3. Toki Tori
Available on iOS (designed for iPhone and iPad), Android, Windows, Mac OS, Linux and Wii.

This game is designed for everyone, especially for those who used to love Lemmings. Its goal is to get Toki Tori, a cute yellow bird, to collect all the eggs in a level using limited tools and power-ups, such as building bridge, using teleportation or killing annoying ennemies.

4. Fling!
Available on iOS (designed for iPhone) and Android.

A cute game with cute graphics. Its goal is to throw all the Flings off the screen by pushing one towards the other, a little bit like billard for fingers.

5. World of Goo
Available on iOS (designed for iPhone and iPad), Android, Windows, Mac OS, Linux and Wii.

I can’t and will never talk about games without talking about World Of Goo, which is by far the best game I’ve ever played on any console, phone or computer. It features the most original gameplay ever with the best graphics and soundtrack. I have it on absolutely all my devices, and I think it will stay that way for at least five more years. If you want to try only one of these 5 games, be sure to choose this one!

My Review of Slash’s Show

Note: Before you start reading my review of Slash’s show, I think it would be fair if I told you a bit about the musical stuff I usually listen to and love. I am a symphonic metal fan (it has nothing to do with heavy metal for those who are afraid of the word ‘metal’). My favorite bands are Nightwish, Leaves’ Eyes, Delain, Within Temptation and many similar bands and I seldom listen to other genres of music. So where is Slash in all this story and what did I think of Slash’s show? Read on 🙂

Let me first start by saying that I practically never heard of Slash. I knew this name was the name of a guitarist because he can be found as a character in a video game I love, Guitar Hero. Besides that, I knew nothing else concerning Slash, but I had many friends who were going and so I began asking myself ‘who is Slash?’. The only answer I got is “he is the guitarist of Guns’N’Roses and probably the best guitarist in the world”. However, this was not enough for me to go to the show since, as I mentioned above, I rarely listen to something else than symphonic metal. Then I got free tickets, took a friend with me and yalla I was going to Slash’s concert.

What did I think of the show? I loved it. It was great, absolutely great. I didn’t know a single song from Slash and the band that accompanied him, except the two songs by Guns’N’Roses (“Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City”). Myles Kennedy, the singer of the band, also known as Myles ‘F***ing’ Kennedy (as Slash called him) kept the crowd very excited all along the show and talked often and thanks god didn’t say the super cliché sentence every artist in Lebanon says “I love Beirut, best city in the world” — of course, he said nice things but never this recurring particular one. We also got everything we expected and more: great vocals and mind-blowing guitar solos. Also, another great thing about the show, especially compared to other shows, was that the show lasted two hours approximately which is amazing, and every second of these two hours, there were hundreds of people jumping in the standing zone (and the seated zone!).

I also wanted to say something many of my friends wanted me to admit: Yes, I admit Slash is the best guitarist in the world.

Oh and one more thing. I noticed that every single show I’ve ever seen at Byblos Festival was great: Slash, Moby, Keane, Gorillaz, Grease, Gonzales … So thank you Byblos Festival for this show (and for the tickets :-D) !
